On 1st December 1898 Company 59737, The British Footwear Manufacturers Federation (BFMF) was registered. This registration formalised the existing affiliation of UK Regional Footwear Manufacturing bodies. The BFMF changed its name to the British Footwear Association at an Extraordinary General Meeting on 27th March 1996.
Much has changed over the years. What hasn’t changed is the need for us as an industry to work together to support, promote and represent our interests and businesses nationally and internationally .
To celebrate we will be holding three special events.
In December 2018, we are co-hosting a parliamentary reception with Andrea Leadsom, Leader of the House of Commons. BFA will be launching its Anniversary year and bringing senior members of the industry together with government.
In March 2019, we will be hosting an AGM and industry meetings, with the evening topped off with our 120th Anniversary Dinner. The historic Northamptonshire Manufacturers annual dinner will play host to colleagues from around the country. We are delighted to be holding this in the heart of the UK’s high quality shoemaking region. The event will take place at the beautifully refurbished Delapre Abbey in Northampton. For further details see our news and events pages.
In July 2019, we will be holding a British Footwear Brand Showcase in partnership with Pentland at their wonderful lakeside headquarters in London. Given contemporary trade issues, we thought it was time to come together and promote our brilliant British brands to as wide an audience as possible.
Alongside this, we and Northampton Museum have created a conversation piece of a style or brand of British footwear to represent each decade of our existence. From December 2018 to December 2019 we will be sharing a style or brand a month. Have we included your favourite? Join the conversation at #BFA120.
Happy Birthday to all of us. To every member of the Great British Footwear Industry past, present and future. We hope to see you all in 2019.
